Medical Billing and Coding is a very rewarding career which is often overlooked. Most people stumble across the medical billing and coding industry by accident. Many people who are not currently in the Healthcare industry are unaware of its existence. This is a great career for people who may use a wheelchair.  Doctors offices and hospitals are required by law to be handicapped- accessible. In the past a medical biller or coder was known as a Medical Secretary; however, it is now a specialized skill. A medical biller or coder can now earn a designated certification that is acknowledged by all Healthcare Providers and facilities across the United States of America.

FACT: In 1996 while the Bill Clinton Administration was in office, Congress passed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) due to concerns about fraud within the health care industry. The purpose of HIPAA is to improve the continuity of health insurance coverage, protect against fraud & abuse in health insurance, create and improve privacy standards for electronic health information. The Administrative Simplification provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA, Title II) required the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to establish national standards for electronic health care transactions and national identifiers for providers, health plans, and employers. It also addressed the security and privacy of health data. As the industry adopts these standards for the efficiency and effectiveness of the nation's health care system will improve the use of electronic data interchange. The government recently implemented the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) which will allow billions to be invested into Health Care and Education.

GREAT NEWS!!!!There is a demand for individuals who are skilled in medical billing and coding. A medical biller or coder plays a very important role in keeping health information protected. Many agencies are hiring individuals who are skilled with claims processing, claim auditing, chart auditing, healthcare customer service, coding, and billing. You are not required to have a degree or certification to work in this industry. Many employers are willing to train!
